“As
our ice-breaker heaves and churns its way across the pack-ice,
penguins, when seen from the ship’s bridge, become mere
dots on the ice floes. Our vessel, ten stories high, towers
high above the earth-bound birds as it ploughs its way in a
southerly direction. How much smaller the penguins become when
seen from our rising helicopter – specks which soon disappear
from view, retained only in memory. As the world falls away,
the ship also becomes a tiny dot on an ice-floe, lonely and
insignificant on a colossal ocean of ice.”

To
compile the Antarctica chapter, Steve made separate
approaches to the frozen continent, first from South
America and then from New Zealand. We see spectacular
scenery, as well as Antarctica’s wildlife in action. He hired
a helicopter to photograph the land and wildlife from the air,
and spent a month on a Russian icebreaker. |

UNTAMED has eight
spectacular fold-out panoramic images, each four
pages wide, such as this magnificent image of an iceberg with penguins. |
